Foreign notaries recognised in Estonia
In this article we describe all countries and jurisdictions whose notary documents and powers of attorney (PoA) are recognised in Estonia.
The list of foreign countries whose PoA certified or authenticated by a local authority or a notary is equivalent to a PoA certified by an Estonian notary:
- Albania;
- Andorra;
- Armenia;
- Australia;
(except for Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Norfolk Island) - Austria;
- Belarus;
- Belgium;
- Bolivia;
- Bosnia and Herzegovina;
- Brazil;
- Bulgaria;
- Canada;
- Chile;
- China;
(except for Macau) - Colombia;
- Costa Rica;
- Croatia;
- Cyprus;
- Czech Republic;
- Denmark;
- Dominican Republic;
- Ecuador;
- El Salvador;
- Finland;
- France;
- Georgia;

- Greece;
- Guatemala;
- Honduras;

(except for American Samoa, Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands) - Uruguay;
- Uzbekistan;
- Vatican City (Holy See).
- Venezuela.
Besides countries mentioned above, the officials whose certified or authenticated PoA is equivalent to a PoA certified by an Estonian notary are:
- A notary public of the State of Louisiana, United States;
- A notary of the Province of Quebec, Canada (notaire, notary);
- A scrivener notary of the City of London;
- A notary of Puerto Rico (notario, notary).
For the PoA certified or authenticated by the officials (notaries) of countries mentioned above, the requirement for legalisation or apostille certification must also be met unless otherwise provided by an international treaty.
If a country has not joined the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents quite yet, then the document has to be legalised by both the competent authority of the respective country and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, shall be considered equivalent to a power of attorney certified by an Estonian notary.
